This project involved the remediation of a concrete pool where severe honeycombing and concrete spalling had compromised both the structural integrity and watertightness of the pool shell. Left untreated, the defects risked ongoing water leakage, reinforcement corrosion, and progressive structural deterioration.
The Challenge
- Honeycombing – Large voids within the concrete matrix had formed during the original pour, creating weak zones and open pathways for water ingress.
- Spalling & Reinforcement Corrosion – Exposed steel reinforcement was corroding, leading to delamination and loss of cover concrete.
- Durability Risk – Without remediation, the pool’s structural capacity and waterproofing integrity would continue to decline.
Approach
Atomic Projects delivered a targeted pool remediation program to restore structural integrity and ensure long-term durability.
Scope of works included:
- Defective Concrete Removal – Chipping back all honeycombed and delaminated areas to sound substrate.
- Steel Reinforcement Treatment – Cleaning, passivating, and protecting exposed reinforcement to halt corrosion.
- High-Strength Repair Mortar Application – Rebuilding honeycombed and spalled sections with polymer-modified, high-build mortars designed for submerged use.
- Surface Fairing & Profiling – Restoring the internal surface of the pool for watertightness and correct finish.
- Protective Coating System – Application of a waterproofing/epoxy coating system to seal the pool structure and extend service life.
Execution
- Preparation & Investigation
- Defective areas were sounded and mapped to determine full extent of honeycombing.
- Catchment and water diversion measures put in place to ensure safe working conditions.
- Concrete Removal & Reinforcement Repair
- All unsound and porous concrete was removed.
- Corroded steel reinforcement was cleaned back to bright metal and passivated.
- Structural Rebuild
- High-strength repair mortars placed and cured in layers to rebuild affected zones.
- Honeycombed areas were densely compacted to eliminate voids and ensure full coverage.
- Finishing & Protection
- Surfaces levelled and faired to match the pool profile.
- Final waterproofing and protective coatings applied across the pool shell.
Outcome
- Structural Integrity Restored – Honeycombing and spalling defects eliminated, reinforcement fully protected.
- Extended Service Life – Repair mortars and coatings provide a durable, watertight finish.
- Safe & Functional Pool – The structure was reinstated to a condition fit for long-term service.
Project Significance
This pool remediation shows the importance of addressing hidden defects like honeycombing early. By combining reinforcement protection, structural mortars, and waterproofing systems, Atomic Projects restored both the strength and functionality of the pool, ensuring it can be safely enjoyed for decades to come.
