Brick Replacement & Repointing
Specialist replacement of spalled, damaged, or failing bricks, combined with repointing that restores strength, weatherproofing, and uniform aesthetics.

Brickwork is one of the most durable construction materials in Australian buildings — but it is not maintenance-free. Over decades, bricks exposed to moisture cycles, salt attack, freeze-thaw stress, and corroded wall ties begin to spall, crack, and deteriorate. Mortar joints erode and open, allowing water to penetrate deep into the wall cavity, accelerating corrosion of embedded steel and causing progressive structural damage.

At Atomic Projects, our brick replacement and repointing works are carried out by experienced masonry teams who understand both the structural and aesthetic requirements of the job. Whether you have a heritage sandstock wall, a face brick residential building, or a modern commercial façade, we deliver surgical, durable, and visually seamless repairs.

How We Approach Brick Replacement and Repointing

  1. Defect Survey and Brick Assessment — We conduct a systematic condition survey, identifying all spalled, cracked, and hollow bricks using physical tap testing and visual inspection. We photograph and map every defect location so nothing is missed.
  2. Mortar Analysis — We test existing mortar for strength, porosity, and salt content. This is critical — applying a mortar stronger than the existing brick causes spalling and should be avoided. Our mortar specifications are matched to the substrate.
  3. Heritage and Aesthetic Matching — For heritage buildings and face brick façades, we source replacement bricks through our direct supply chain, including reclaimed and reproduction heritage bricks. Test panels are submitted for approval before works proceed.
  4. Careful Brick Removal — Damaged bricks are cut out with precision disc saws and chisels, protecting surrounding mortar joints and adjacent bricks from disturbance.
  5. Repointing of Existing Joints — Failed mortar joints across the affected wall face are raked back to a minimum 15mm depth, cleaned of dust and debris, and then repointed with a compatible mortar in matching colour and profile.
  6. Curing and Protection — New work is protected during curing from direct sun, rain, and drying winds. On completion, we provide maintenance advice for the ongoing care of the brickwork and mortar.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my brickwork needs repointing or full brick replacement?
Repointing is appropriate where the bricks themselves are sound but mortar joints have eroded, opened, or lost adhesion. Where bricks are spalling, crumbling, or showing signs of severe salt damage or corrosion-related failure, brick replacement is required alongside repointing. Our inspection reports clearly differentiate between the two so you can plan and budget accordingly.

Can you match heritage brick colours and profiles?
Yes — we have direct relationships with heritage brick suppliers and can source handmade, wirecut, and extruded brick types in a wide range of colours and textures. For mortar profile matching, we replicate the original joint style (flush, weathered, recessed) to maintain the building's character. We always run test panels before full-scale works begin.

Is brick repointing covered by strata levies and maintenance budgets?
Generally yes — brick replacement and repointing are considered building envelope maintenance and are typically funded through the strata administrative or capital works fund depending on the scale of works. We can provide preliminary cost assessments to assist with levy planning and works scheduling.

How long does repointing last?
A correctly specified lime or cementitious mortar repoint in Australian conditions will typically last 20–40 years before requiring attention. Service life depends significantly on exposure conditions (south-facing vs north-facing walls, coastal vs inland) and the quality of the original application.

What standards apply to masonry repairs?
All masonry repair works at Atomic Projects are carried out in compliance with AS 3700 — Masonry Structures. For heritage buildings, we additionally reference National Trust guidelines and Heritage Council of NSW conservation policies to ensure repairs are sympathetic and reversible where possible.
